West of Shanghai is a 1937 American adventure film directed by John Farrow and starring Boris Karloff as a Chinese warlord. It is based on the 1920 Porter Emerson Browne play The Bad Man. During the Chinese Civil War (1927–1950), rival American businessmen travel to a remote missionary outpost in a region controlled by General Fang. Their goal is to win control of oilfields currently in default. Fang puts down a revolt encouraged by one businessmen as a favor to the original owner.
