Offering parallels to today's wars, this story about the Philippine-American War explores how ideological conflict often terrorizes local people. When American soldiers arrive in a fictional village, its leader Rafael declares himself their friend. His brother, leader of the rebels, resents both Spanish and American imperial control. When American war aims change, Rafael must protect his friends and neighbors from both the Americans and his brother's rebels.
