Abstract

Käte Frankenthal (1889–1976) was a German physician and politician. After receiving a doctorate in 1914, she worked at a hospital in Berlin, before leaving to become a doctor in a small town. After the outbreak of World War I, Frankenthal attempted to enlist in the German Army as a doctor, but was rejected due to her gender. She subsequently joined the Austro-Hungarian Army. After the war she worked at the Charité hospital in Berlin, but was dismissed to make room for male veterans. Frankenthal was active in politics as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Following the ascension of Adolf Hitler, Frankenthal fled Germany, eventually settling in New York. Although she traveled to Germany after the war, and was honored by the city of Berlin in 1974, she remained a resident of New York for the remainder of her life.
