Abstract

This work examines the codes and rituals inscribed in romantic love among the neo-Granadian literate elites of the mid-nineteenth century. Based on the reading of personal and intimate correspondence of members of the bourgeoisie of the time, the author argues that changes in the private and intimate sphere, including aspects such as the construction of masculinities and femininities, the choice of marriage partners, moral values and the construction of subjectivity -associated with the impact of Romanticism- were concurrent with the political processes that the country was undergoing. This book offers a different interpretation of the history of Bogotá in the nineteenth century, which is located within an extensive historiography, mostly developed outside Latin America, referring to the history of emotions and the culture of sensibility.
