Abstract

Hunger offers an uncompromising and brutal portrait of the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike that speaks to larger issues of prisoners' rights. Prisoners in Northern Ireland's Maze prison launch a seven-month strike to win status as political prisoners, which the British government had revoked for Irish Republican Army members during the Troubles. The film focuses on Bobby Sands (1954-1981), but it also documents the no-wash strike as well as guards beating and sodomizing prisoners.
