Abstract

Juno and the Paycock is a 1930 British comedy film written and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the successful 1924 play of the same name by Seán O'Casey. The film relays a tragicomic tale of the disintegration of one family during the Irish Civil War (1922-1923). During the Irish War of Indipendence (1919–1921), a family earns a big inheritance. They start leading a rich life, forgetting what the most important values of life really are. At the end, they discover they will not receive that inheritance; the family is destroyed and penniless. They must sell their home and start living in the slums of Dublin. The war disrupts the family life even further, as Juno struggles to support her unemployed, drunk husband and her two teenage children, who both become involved with the Irish Republican Army.
