Abstract

This book chapter on sexual violence in war explores rape and other forms of sexual violence committed by combatants during armed conflict, war, or military occupation, sometimes as spoils of war, other times for other motives. Wartime sexual violence includes rape, sexual mutilation, sexualized torture, sexual humiliation, forced prostitution, sexual slavery and forced pregnancies or abortions. Even though its victims are commonly imagined as female, they also can be male and of any age.
