Kriegerfrauen: Familienpolitik und Geschlechterverhältnisse im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg

Why did the German Empire collapse in the November Revolution in 1918, while the National Socialist "Volksgemeinschaft" remained relatively intact in the Second World War? This book, offers a comparative study on family support, which subsidized the wives of German soldiers in the First and Second World Wars. In the First World War, the family support organized by municipalities remained insufficient and caused constant internal unrest, which contributed to the instability of the imperial empire. On the other hand, the National Socialists decided to a large social provisioning of women in wartime in order to avoid unrest on the "home front." Due to the abundance of the archival material, the author compiles an extraordinarily dense description of the social reality of the Wilhelminian and National Socialist societies during the wars. In doing so, it sketches the effects of social-political measures on the relationship between the sexes and thus made an important contribution to the social and gender history of the war in Germany.
