Abstract | Boetie Gaan Border Toe! is a 1984 film set during the "South African Border War", or the Namibian War of Independence (1966-1990), which was fought between the South African Defence Force (SADF) and the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), an armed wing of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO). The film, directed by Regardt van den Bergh, follows Boetie van Tonder (Arnold Vosloo), a young Afrikaner from a rich family, who faces conscription in the South African military. Although initially determined to resist national service and defy the call, he quickly finds comfort in the company of his fellow conscripts as they weather the harshness of basic training and their subsequent deployment to the Angolan border. The film's production was assisted by the South African Defence Force. Together with its 1985 sequel, Boetie Op Manoeuvres, the films have been criticized for their propagandistic depiction of the South African military and the romanticized outlook on the South African Border War. If instructors want to use this propaganda film they will have to critically contextualize and anaylze it. |
