Abstract | In this chapter on "German Patriotic Women’s Work in War and Peacetime" in the edited volume On the Road to Total War: The American Civil War and the German Wars of Unification, 1861-1871 the author explores the activities of German middle- and upper-class women during and after the German Wars of Unification of 1864, 1866, and 1870-71. Starting already with the Italian Wars of Unification of 1859 in the Grand Dutchy in Baden, and continuing in the folkowing German Wars of Unification, princesses and queens in the German territorial states initiated the founding of patriotic women's assocition and called women in their states to action to support the war efforts by providing the care of voluntary nurses and material support with dressing material, food, bedding and clothing. In peacetime they started to train women for voluntary and professional nursing in peace and war. |
