Abstract

A historical glimpse at class oppression in northern Brazil in the 1890s as seen through the eyes of a poor farming family in the outcast, poverty-stricken, and neglected lower strata of Brazilian society. During the War of Canudos (1895-1898) in the province of Bahia, a family joins a growing community led by spiritual leader Antonio Conselheiro (1830-1897) after losing their crop to drought and livestock to pay taxes. Soon thereafter, the Brazilian Republic sends in the national army to destroy the settlement and their community.
