This volume brings together the various areas of recent research on the First World War and opens up new topics for further examination. The majority of the articles are intended to contribute to a history of mentality of the war. The volume also addresses what the war truly meant and how it acted on the people who lived it, as is the situation of parts of the population whose history is looming in the events of the world war: women, children and the world, the numerous victims of the war on the front and in the home. The volume inquires into both the overall social shifts in the war and the effects and consequences of the war experience for the political and cultural life of the Weimar Republic. This applies above all to the continuity of the political myths of the war (of the Verdun and Langemarck myth), which contributed decisively to the weakening of the republic and greatly encouraged the extreme nationalism of the postwar period.
