Abstract

This article discusses 35 French music schools, including the Conservatoire de Paris, nationalized during the First World War. These schools were all official - that is to say, subsidized and surveilled by the public Department of Education, who would send inspectors every spring to assess the quality of education. The reports born of these inspections give deep primary insight into the 800 professors who, in 1914, taught  music classes to 11,500 students, of both genders, from the ages of 6 to about 25 years old. This article analyzes these reports through the lens of gender relations, and aims to analyze the place of women, real and symbolic, in the musical world during the First World War.
